About our Postdoctoral researcher candidate Max van Drunen

Max is a postdoc at the Institute for Information Law and the AI, Media & Democracy Lab, where he researches the responsibilities companies have when they use AI to produce and distribute information. He has focused in particular on the use of personalisation to distribute news and political advertisements. In that context he has for example explored how editorial independence should be safeguarded when editorial decisions are outsourced to AI, how individuals should be informed about the way AI decides what information they do and do not see, and how the law can be used to ensure researchers gain access to the data they need to scrutinise AI systems. To fully understand these issues Max has collaborated extensively with media, communication, and computer scientists.
