A Visit from the AI Policy Lab

AI Policy Lab Coordinator Tatyana Sarayeva visited us all the way from Umeå University last week to observe the inner workings of the AI, Media and Democracy Lab and discuss research practices and approaches. Since its establishment in January 2024, the AI Policy Lab has aimed to shape the future of AI governance and policy with an interdisciplinary and cross-sectorial approach. It prioritizes responsible and operationalisable innovation to foster an informed, responsible, and sustainable integration of AI in society.

During her visit, Tatyana presented the AI Policy Lab’s agenda and highlighted its research focal points, as well as their foundational approach:

Exploration and Analysis

  • Establishing comprehensive analyses of existing AI policies at the national and international levels to identify gaps, inefficiencies, and areas for improvement
  • Adapting AI-related policies, such as the AI Act or other regulatory approaches to address emerging AI challenges.

Implementation and Integration:

  • Developing effective, robust, socio-technical solutions for the effective regulation and governance of AI systems.
  • Integrating ethical, legal and social considerations into all phases of AI development, ensuring that systems align with responsible AI policies.

Advocacy:

  • Providing expert guidance on regulatory frameworks and compliance to support the implementation of effective AI policies.
  •  Providing multidisciplinary expertise in rapidly developing policy and technical conversations.

She furthermore highlighted their AI Policy Exchange Forum (AIPEX) project, an open online environment aiming to promote academic discussion on all aspects of AI policy and governance. It welcomes submissions for publication with the goal of engaging in public debate rather than being confined to a traditional, concealed review process. Read more about the submission process here.
