The AI, Media and Democracy Lab warmly invites you to an exclusive session dedicated to the forthcoming Council of Europe report on Generative AI & Democracy – Risks & Opportunities. In our report, we signal the advantages and risks that the use of Generative AI (GenAI) can bring for democracy, with a particular focus on the media and electoral processes.
Topics include the use of generative AI in journalism and electoral campaigns, the public sector’s infrastructural dependency on Big Tech actors and the role of authenticity in an increasingly digitised society. We will discuss the downstream impact of these dynamics on fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and non-discrimination, and democratic procedures of participation and deliberation.
During this afternoon event, there will be room to engage directly with diverse stakeholders and the scientific experts behind the study and its underlying research projects and offer feedback and perspectives on the draft recommendations. Together, we will chart novel (research) challenges and paths forward to safeguard democratic systems in the era of generative AI.
