The legal research cluster focuses on the ethical and regulatory frameworks and conditions for the responsible use of AI in the media. They consider questions revolving around the normative implications of AI in the media and aim to identify common principles and the legal conditions needed for responsible and human-centric AI in the media. Some key questions this cluster addresses are: What is the role of law in enabling AI innovation? How could or should AI be regulated to enable a healthy and pluralistic media landscape? How should we deal with power and media concentration in the context of the growing use of AI in the media?
Furthermore, this cluster aims to discuss and analyse the effectiveness of the upcoming ethical and regulatory frameworks in the field of AI and media. They follow current policy debates and proposals (e.g. AI Act, DSA, DMA, and European Media Freedom Act) at EU level, but also observe legal developments at national levels, outside the EU, and analyse guidelines brought forward by international (human rights) organisations, such as the Council of Europe. The legal clusters’ research thereby helps to analyse the current and future regulatory frameworks, identify common principles and best practices on journalistic algorithmic ethics, and make concrete policy proposals and recommendations.
