Have YouTube and Meta consciously built addiction machines?

Several lawsuits are being filed in the United States against social media companies for their seemingly addictive and predatory design, and the European Commission is investigating TikTok’s compliance with the DSA through its endless scroll feature and recommender system. In this context, Claes de Vreese, our lab director, has spoken to Belgian newspaper De Morgen about the possible consequences of these legal proceedings. The legitimacy of the very designs central to the business models of these companies is being put under scrutiny; some of these cases are also now dealing with the boundaries of clinical definitions of addiction in the attempt to attribute blame.
