Our postdoctoral researcher Nicolas Mattis was recently at the High-Level Event on Democracy organized by the European Commission as part of the broader European Democracy Shield initiative. Nicolas shared insights from research at our lab (conducted with Fabio Votta, Simon Kruschinski, Teresa Elena Weikmann, Claes de Vreese) as part of a panel on the challenges of AI in elections: empirical data (from the Netherlands) showing that AI-generated electoral content is rarely actually flagged as AI-generated, LLMs are increasingly being used for voting advice, but citizens also seem to be concerned about how AI can play a role in elections.
The recording of the main event in its entirety is available below. Nicolas’ panel begins at timestamp cca. 13:52.
