With the context of the announcement of the “Genesis Mission” grants, the Trump administration’s $5 billion plan for accelerating scientific research through the use of AI, our co-director Claes de Vreese talked to The Verge about the adequacy of the approach the United States are taking in their aim to boost research efforts. He comments that the administration’s strategy seems to misunderstand how the speed of breakthroughs in research is not necessarily increased by more venture capital-type funding — and this new direction, especially combined with other recent cuts and grant cancellations, risks upending the previously successful US university research model.
