Nanda Piersma is the scientific director of the Centre of Expertise Applied Artificial Intelligence at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA) and part of the Intelligent and Autonomous Systems (IAS) group at the Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI).
Nanda’s research focuses on the development of human-centric digital technology with an eye on societal values. While increasing digitization brings about positive change in many aspects, Nanda aspires to highlight the importance of developing technology in such a way that it safeguards privacy, autonomy and inclusivity. For example, using data “because we can” often leads to a situation where privacy is violated, people are disadvantaged or even discriminated against, and where the power of data owners leads to abuse. She discusses the responsible construction of IT systems in her recent book “System Error, Please Restart”.
Nanda is a member of the Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands (SER). She is also involved in various national networks related to data science, such as the Practice-oriented ICT research platform (Prio) and the Dutch AI coalition (NLAIC).
