Project Overview
Journalistic organisations are losing control over their distribution to American parties. Globally, publishers expect to lose 40% of their traffic in the coming years as a result of the rise of Google’s AI overview and AI-mode. For the project ‘Digital Autonomy That Fits’, the AI, Media & Democracy Lab is collaborating with the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA), Waag Future Lab, De Correspondent, and Follow The Money to investigate how media organizations can utilise open-source tools and large language models (LLMs) to regain control over their distribution, and thereby their relationship with the public.
Approach
The project will test and implement existing open-source European LLMs and technical tools, together with media organisations and their audiences, to develop an interface that offers citizens better access to the rich digital content and archives of De Correspondent and Follow the Money. In addition, concrete recommendations will be made regarding what is needed to increase the usability of these alternative open-source LLMs for the media sector.
The findings will further inform knowledge sharing sessions, as well as being compiled into guidance documents and research papers.
This project is funded by the SIDN fund.
