How a journalist struck out with quotes made up by AI

In the context of Peter Vandermeersch’s suspension from his fellowship at the Belgian media group Mediahuis due to his use of fictional, AI-generated quotes in his writing, along with many other similar incidents in journalism and academia, our member Hannes Cools was invited by NRC to comment on writers’ reliance on AI. He calls for a need to increase AI literacy in newsrooms, as its output can straddle the line between truth and falsehood, making it harder to distinguish facts.
