Infrastructure dependencies and solutions for Dutch media

Project Overview

In the context of increased public discontent with major players in the social media and tech industries, and many seeking alternatives to dominant sites, this project aims to thoroughly map specific dependencies that burden the Dutch media sector. In collaboration with Waag Futurelab, we will analyze problematic connections, the feasibility of switching to alternatives, and obstacles organizations face in these processes. The aim is to create guidelines for successful transitioning towards more open options that prioritize human rights and democratic principles.

Approach

This project follows an ethnographic approach, using insights from workshops, focus groups, interviews, and case studies of organizations who have already effectively transitioned to alternative media infrastructures. All of these sources will yield practical information on how the broader Dutch media sector can best approach infrastructure transitions.

The findings will further inform knowledge sharing sessions, as well as being compiled into guidance documents and research papers.
